An economic analysis of hardwood fiber production on dryland irrigated sites in the US Southeast
نویسندگان
چکیده
Although there is renewed interest in intensively managed, short-rotation plantations as a source of hardwood for pulp mills, few have been established in the Southeast. Understanding all the costs associated with these plantations will help determine their feasibility. Using a model developed to summarize all the costs, a break-even analysis was completed to determine the delivered cost for plantations of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) from a hypothetical fiber farm in 2003. Using current yield from an experimental fiber farm, short-rotation cottonwood plantations were not cost effective, as delivered cost to a pulp mill averaged 78$ t . If yield can be increased by 40% through improvements in genetics and silvicultural practices, delivered cost is reduced to 60$ t . Thus, finding this additional yield is key to the cost feasibility of intensively managed, short-rotation hardwood plantations. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Assessment of productive efficiency for irrigated and dryland wheat farming in Iran using Data Envelopment Analysis
Wheat is widely grown in Iran as a staple food; therefore, the government there encourages farmers to produce wheat (a common agricultural enterprise) by increasing farm productivity and efficiency. The study compares the efficiency of wheat production for dryland (low input) and irrigated (high input) systems across Iranian provinces by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The average techni...
متن کاملEnergy Efficiency Analysis and Modeling the Relationship between Energy Inputs and Wheat Yield in Iran
Wheat is the dominant cereal crop constituting the first staple food in Iran. This paper studies the energy consumption patterns and the relationship between energy inputs and yield for Wheat production in Iranian agriculture during the period 1986 – 2008. The results indicated that total energy inputs in irrigated and dryland wheat production increased from 29.01 and 9.81 GJ ha-1 in 1986 to 44...
متن کاملDevelopment of a peanut irrigation management decision aid using climate-based information
Water demand for irrigation in the Southeast is expected to increase in the future. There is a need to combine climate information and risk analysis for peanut irrigation in the southeastern US. This paper describes a peanut irrigation decision support system which was developed to assist growers and to provide information on the levels of profitability of peanut production with and without irr...

In many crop producing areas of the world there are reports of yield decline and loss of productive potential in soils. Little is known about the long term effects of sugarcane monocropping on changes in physical, chemical and biological properties of soils. The aim of this study was to quantify the physical and chemical condition of soils under sugarcane production in northern Kwazulu-Natal, a...
